The patent race (in slow motion)
The last quarter of 2023 saw Europe come to a halt. Even worse, our country only achieved a growth of 0.1%. Too little to be at ease. Of course, our companies have always surprised us.
In a positive way. Managing to keep us on the virtuous path of growth. In the United States in 2023, there were 425 thousand applications and 348 thousand patents. To provide a comparison (even though it’s relative to 2022), in Europe, patent applications exceeded 193 thousand.
And just for comparison, Italy as a whole is around 7 thousand patents. Italy is at a standstill at 2.5%, while neighboring Switzerland has a share of 4.7%. Of course, these numbers cannot entirely illustrate how prepared a country is for growth. But they at least give an idea of how far Italy still has to go to create a favorable environment for innovation, which is the first piece of the development puzzle.
