Tractors and protests, the government seeks funds. Discount on income tax and expensive diesel. Farmers (divided) in Rome- Corriere.it

The U-turn by Brussels on pesticide cuts is “a first step”, but for Italian farmers the tractor protest continues, even though Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has claimed the EU Commission’s halt as “an Italian victory”. The government is working to meet the farmers’ demands through the Milleproroghe decree.

From extending the exemption of IRPEF for agricultural and dominical incomes to the reinstatement of the fuel tax credit for agriculture, and to the decontribution for young farmers under 40, just over 200 million euros are needed. The issue remains where to find them.

An amendment by the League calls for the extension of the agricultural tax exemption for 2024, and League senator Gianmarco Centinaio urges the prime minister “to make those resources available without too much difficulty, to send a signal to the farmers who are struggling to get by”. IRPEF discount and expensive diesel. However, work continues on an intervention that reshapes the tax on agricultural land, safeguarding the lowest incomes.

Today at the Chamber, the voting on the amendments begins. From Italia Viva to the 5 Stars Movement, the requests to extend the agricultural IRPEF exemption (from 1 to 3 years, for IV), the tax credit for the purchase of agricultural machinery, and the decontribution for new agricultural entrepreneurs (M5S) are similar.

The Democratic Party attacks the government “which instead of finding resources to help farmers, is launching yet another tax amnesty”, referring to the possible reopening of the terms of the scrappage scheme. Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida (a flyer from the rebellious farmers yesterday called for his resignation) reiterates that “we must think about the resources we have and I prefer to intervene for those who have less”.

And to those who protest he responds: “Whoever proposes constructive things will be listened to”. And on Friday, he will receive the Agricultural Confederation, which had requested an urgent meeting.

Meanwhile, protests continue throughout Italy, from Sardinia to Sicily, from Tuscany to Emilia-Romagna, to Molise. Near Grosseto, law enforcement blocked a procession of tractors, with a 9 km tailback on the Aurelia; another 250 vehicles occupied a toll booth on the A14 in the Bologna area.

And Rome is now surrounded. The two opposing movements (Agricultural Redemption and the United Agricultural Committees) are divided.

The United Agricultural Committees of Danilo Calvani, a former “pitchforks” protester, have already placed their thousand tractors (on lease) at each cardinal point: Albano, Santa Palomba, Torrimpietra, Formello, Palombara Sabina, Settecamini, and Valmontone. Tomorrow, they would like to converge in Rome in 7 squares.

Those of Agricultural Redemption, with the sit-in on via Nomentana, have instead asked the Prefecture for permission to parade on Friday, the day after Calvani, bringing their 2 thousand tractors in front of the political palaces and in symbolic places: from the Vatican to the Colosseum. Today in Montesilvano (Pescara), the regional representatives of the movement will meet: in the absence of precise signals from the government, the hard line could prevail.

The protest would then immediately escalate on the GRA, paralyzing Rome. *Corriere della Sera is also on Whatsapp.
