On February 12th, in Milan, the “night of the invisible” will take place. It is the first of 2024 and the fifth since 2008. It’s the night when the most vulnerable regain an identity and even a voice. They won’t hear a coin falling into the bowl next to the sign “I’m hungry,” but someone will speak to them.
They will be the protagonists of a census, for many the first of their lives: the census of the homeless. Rodolfo DeBenedetti (registrations open until February 4, inquiries can be made to the email address: [email protected]) will patrol the city in small groups between 8 pm and 1 am. They will count how many are sleeping rough. They will listen to their stories and note their needs.
Researchers from Leap (Laboratory for Effective Anti-Poverty Policies) at Bocconi University, a partner of the “RacContami 2024” initiative, will then analyze the picture of homelessness. No magic or miracles. On the night of the invisible, a thousand pairs of attentive eyes are all that’s needed. *Corriere della Sera is also on Whatsapp.
