Cristina Navajas was taken from her apartment on calle Warnes in Buenos Aires on July 13, 1976. Neighbors heard the desperate cries of her children – Camilo and Miguel – and called their grandmother, who took them to safety in Italy. Cristina, on the other hand, was abducted, tortured, and then disappeared, likely in one of the “death flights” used by the military regime to dispose of opposition activists.
She was pregnant. “For 46 years, I searched for my brother; I was sure he was born in captivity and then abducted by my mother’s tormentors,” says Miguel, who has returned to Argentina. Last year, Daniel was finally found.
He is the 133rd former “disappeared” child to have been given back his true identity thanks to the tireless search and the genetic database of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, the grandmothers who lost daughters or sons but never lost hope of finding those newborns. There are still 300 missing, and now that many grandmothers have passed away, there is a risk that the search will stop due to lack of funds. The Milei government has repeatedly questioned the number of desaparecidos, 30,000 according to human rights organizations, and the trials of the military (more than 1,200 have been convicted in 300 trials).
For now, the Grandmothers are making do with the budget approved last year – “which, with 200% inflation, has become very little” – with the risk of losing that too. However, no one can evict them from the Casa por la Identidad inside the ESMA, the infamous military school where 5,000 people were detained. Only 200 came out alive.

Estaba embarazada. “Durante 46 años busqué a mi hermano; estaba seguro de que había nacido en cautiverio y luego fue secuestrado por los torturadores de mi madre”, dice Miguel, quien ha regresado a Argentina.
El año pasado, finalmente encontraron a Daniel. Él es el 133º ex “desaparecido” al que se le ha restituido su verdadera identidad gracias a la incansable búsqueda y la base de datos genéticos de las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, las abuelas que perdieron a sus hijas o hijos pero nunca perdieron la esperanza de encontrar esos recién nacidos. Aún faltan 300 por encontrar, y ahora que muchas abuelas han fallecido, hay riesgo de que la búsqueda se detenga por falta de fondos.
El gobierno de Milei ha cuestionado repetidamente el número de desaparecidos, 30.000 según organizaciones de derechos humanos, y los juicios a militares (más de 1.200 han sido condenados en 300 juicios). Por ahora, las Abuelas se conforman con el presupuesto aprobado el año pasado – “que, con una inflación del 200%, se ha reducido mucho” – con el riesgo de perderlo también. Sin embargo, nadie las puede desalojar de la Casa por la Identidad dentro de la ESMA, la infame escuela militar donde fueron detenidas 5.000 personas.
Solo 200 salieron con vida. Hoy es Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO.
